I’ve got the lowdown on Prague weather in December. And I’m writing this in the middle of the month so temps and gloves are well in mind.

And, if you stick around, I've got a warning about Prague weather forecasts. Hint: Apple is getting it wrong in December.

Lastly, all photos on this page were taken by me in December.

Before we start, please note... Prague has been experiencing warming trends throughout every season. So temperatures are more likely to vary from historical data. I’ve tried to reflect both our standard climate patterns and recent personal experiences. Basically, there are no absolutes when it comes to Prague weather in December, or any month for that matter.

December temperatures in Prague

Ok, so let’s talk December temps.

Prague generally ranges from quite chilly to downright cold during the month. You can expect daytime highs around 2 to 7°C (36 to 45°F). And nighttime temperatures tend to dip to freezing and below, 0 to -5°C (32 to 23°F).

These are the normal temperatures which give you a pretty good estimate of what you can expect. We do see some fluctuation, these temps are expected.

The early 2020's have seen some warmer trends. Prague weather in December of 2023 was very mild, but 2024 has been back to our normal cold temperatures.

Humidity levels in December typically hover around 80-85%, which can make the cold feel more penetrating.

In our home, we often comment about a "wet" cold. It's not always about the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit. It's about the feeling you have from the air and temperature combined.

What to wear in Prague in December?

In general, I would pack clothing according to these temperatures. But your specific itinerary and current forecast will guide you.

So, if you plan to be walking a lot, then pack thermal underwear, a warm sweater, scarf, gloves and a hat.

You may be stepping in and out of shops and restaurants. So dress in layers since they are adaptable to your environment.

Personally I don’t like to wear a super-heavy coat because I carry a backpack. I feel that it adds weight and limits my movement, but everyone is different.

Shoes deserve special attention. Pack something sturdy since the streets can be wet or icy. Prague’s historical area is filled with cobblestones - both on the street and sidewalk. These can be rather slippery in lots of weather.

With so much walking, your feet will thank you for bringing a good pair of shoes.

Will it snow in December?

It's possible, but snow in Prague during December isn't that common. It may snow a day or two, but it's usually a small amount. Think overnight dusting or 1-2 inches in a day.

If it does snow in December, it transforms Prague into a magical winter wonderland. A white layer over the red rooftops and gothic spires creates postcard-perfect scenes.

Unfortunately the snowfall doesn't stick around for long. Maybe a day or two.

Temperatures usually warm up and the urban heat of the city center will melt it away quickly. The city sits in a valley and traps  heat, so the snow will last longer in parks or districts outside the city center - like Prague 6.

Most of our snow in Prague comes in January or February. And we almost never have a white Christmas.

If you really want to experience snow in the Czech Republic, then head to the mountains of Krkonoše or Šumava. Both places enjoy colder temperatures and snowfall lasts longer. Ski slopes will be open in December as well.

Frequently asked about Prague weather in December

I've been working with visitors to Prague for more than 15 years. And I've received a lot of questions about visiting in the winter. Anything from snow to types of shoes - no tennis shoes aren't your friend in December :-)

Here are a few questions and answers that you may find helpful.

What time does it get dark in Prague in December?

Prague experiences shorter days, with the sun rising around 7:30 AM and setting as early as 4:00 PM. It gets dark about 4:30 PM. That's only about 8 hours of daylight! (Depends on the cloud cover.)

This means the city transitions to a cozy, illuminated atmosphere in the late afternoon. It gives you a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the city's enchanting lights.

If you're planning outdoor activities, the best time is usually between 11 AM and 2 PM when temperatures are at their highest.

Also, remember that December includes the winter solstice. That’s the shortest day of the year.

Is it sunny in December?

No, not usually. Cloud cover is common in December, with fully sunny days being somewhat rare. We usually experience about 5-7 clear days throughout the month. The rest are either partly cloudy or overcast.

Fog is another common occurrence, especially in the early morning hours. It can create an ethereal atmosphere as it rolls in from the Vltava River, making the city's spires appear to float above the mist.

Is December a good month to visit Prague?

Yes, if you don't mind a little cold weather. The city is very festive in December and Christmas markets open early in the month.

Winter is also the driest season in Prague. We have cloudy days, but not much rain or snow.

December can be a popular month to visit. So there will be crowds especially on the weekends and during the holidays. But the overall ambiance of the city makes it a good month to visit.

Do hotels and apartments have heating?

Yes, absolutely! Heating is standard everywhere you go. Your hotel should have some type of central heating and apartments will likely have thermostats to control the temperature independently. That's what we have at home.

Smoggy, foggy Prague

Unfortunately, December can have its share of smoggy days and air quality can be poor.

Since the city resides in a basin, it has the tendency to trap pollution. This results in a foggy atmosphere which blocks the sun from reaching us directly. In meteorological terms, I believe it's called inversion.

This is why many December weather forecasts for Prague can be wrong.

For example, here's a screenshot of Apple's weather app compared to the actual weather in Prague - December 28th 2024, approximately 1:30 PM.

Prague weather forecast in December comparison

The app indicates sunny weather which would likely melt any frost. But the picture shows the actual weather - cold and gloomy. I took this picture and made the screenshot to show this exact error.

Apple uses a variety of meteorological sources and they aren't the only one getting this wrong.

From my experience, this inconsistency only occurs when we have smoggy periods. But these can be common in December, so be careful which forecast you choose.

I generally like Ventusky.com which gets a weather report from a local station (Prague/Libus, see screenshot).

Another good forecast site is Yr.no which uses "leading global weather forecasting models." But I haven't found a source that is always reliable. Just like Prague weather in December - you just never know!

Wrapping it up, with a bow

December is a fantastic month to visit Prague. The cold weather only enhances certain experiences and our Christmas markets are some of the best in Europe.

And, the weather brings new things to do and try. Pop-up skating rinks, hot mulled wine (svařák), hearty Czech soups? Yes, yes, yes!

I encourage you to embrace the weather’s unpredictability. Each day can write a slightly different story for your trip, from foggy mornings to snow-dusted evenings - enjoy it all.

I hope this detailed guide to Prague weather in December helps you feel confident in planning your trip.
